INTRODUCTION:
-------------
TextPad is designed to provide the power and functionality to satisfy the
most demanding text editing requirements.  It is Windows hosted, and comes
in 16 and 32-bit editions.  Huge files can be edited by either - just
choose the edition that works best with your PC.  The 32-bit edition can
edit files up to the limits of virtual memory (see Specifications in the
on-line help for full details), and it will work with Windows 95, NT and
Windows 3.1 with Win32s extensions.

To find out more, install TextPad by referring to the instructions below,
and then read the introduction in the on-line help file.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    16-bit Edition:             32-bit Edition:
      o 386SX with 4MB RAM        o 486SX with 4MB RAM (12MB for NT)
      o 1.5MB free disk space     o 2.5MB free disk space
      o Windows 3.1 in 386        o Windows NT 3.51, Windows 95 or
         enhanced mode               Windows 3.1 with Win32s 1.30.172

INSTALLATION:
-------------
    TextPad has a setup program which configures it for the version of
    Windows that you are using.  Some things will not work (including
    the uninstall program) if you don't install it correctly.  You have
    been warned!

    The setup program will preserve your existing preferences when
    updating from an earlier release.

    To install TextPad from a ZIP file:

        1) Unzip into an empty temporary folder, with PKUNZIP 2.04g.
        2) Run SETUP.EXE, and follow the on-screen instructions.
        3) Be sure to install TextPad into a different folder from the
           one used in step 1 above.
        4) Delete the files unzipped in step 1 above.

    The setup program can be forced to run in a particular language by
    running it as follows:

        English:    SETUP -L9
        French:     SETUP -L12
        German:     SETUP -L7
        Italian:    SETUP -L16
        Spanish:    SETUP -L10
        Polish:     SETUP -L21
        Portuguese: SETUP -L22

    DICTIONARIES for the spelling checker are in separate zip files, which
    can be downloaded from http://www.textpad.com/.  To install one, just
    unzip it into the SPELLING subfolder in the TextPad installation folder,
    then select it on the Spelling tab of the Preferences dialog box.

    Important Notes:
    ----------------
    + If you want to associate file extensions with TextPad, do it using
      the Associations tabs on the Preferences dialog box.  This ensures
      that TextPad is started with the correct parameters to handle files
      with spaces in their names, and it enables the uninstall program to
      clean up afterwards.

    + If you intend to use the 32-bit edition with Windows 3.1 or 3.11,
      you must install Win32s 1.30.172 first.  This also installs the 16-bit
      OLE2 files.  If you have Internet access, you can obtain it from:

      CompuServe users can download Win32s from forum MSWIN as PW1118.EXE.

    Keystroke Compatibility:
    ------------------------
    To get backward compatibility with TextPad 2, or with Microsoft, WordStar
    or BRIEF key bindings, select the Compatibility tab on the Preferences
    dialog box, and choose from the list box.

REGISTRATION:
-------------
    If you make use of TextPad you must register it.  Registered users
    will be licensed to use both the 16 and 32-bit editions.  There are
    separate prices for downloading the software yourself, and receiving
    a copy on diskettes.

    Choose "Ordering Information" on the Help menu for detailed instructions.
